It’s the end of the year and both school and sports are finally wrapping up. To cover the spring sports season, The Blue and White interviewed a few of Apopka’s coaches to get a rundown on the season and Apopka’s achievements.
Flag Football
Apopka’s flag football team was able to make it to the state championship. On April 18th, 2024, they played Horizon High School with a score of 13-14. Even though they lost, the team still had an impressive season, finishing with an overall record of 9-5 and being ranked 1st in the district.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team had an amazing season. They finished with a rank of 1st in district, and 19th in Florida. On May 10th, 2024, the team played against Winter Park High School in the state championship. They ended the game with a score of 0-3. However, their overall record for the season was 23-5.
Beach Volleyball
The beach volleyball team made it all the way to districts. In their last game played against Lake Highland Prep on April 23rd, 2024, they lost by a score of 0-3. The team had an overall score of 3-9 and finished 6th in the district.
Lacrosse
Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams played in districts on April 10th, 2024. The boys team lost their game against Lake Minneola High School by a score of 2-16, and ended their season with an overall score of 2-15. The girls team lost their game against Winter Springs High School by a score of 7-8 and had an overall score of 7-8. Both teams ended up ranking similarly in the districts with girls being 4th and boys being 6th.
Softball
This season, Apopka’s baseball team was faced with many challenges. Mr. MacWithey shared that it was hard to “find consistency due to injuries, sicknesses, and other things” and “almost every player on the team at some time during the season missed games.” However, despite these setbacks, the team did very well in a game against Timber Creek “12-1 in 6 innings.” The team finished off the season with an overall record of 9-16. Mr. MacWithey hopes to get everyone back to healthy condition for a great next season.
Baseball
Apopka’s baseball team had a strong season and made it to the playoffs. On May 2nd, 2024, they lost against Lake Brantley by a score of 4-7. However, they’re overall record this season was 15-12 and ended up being 1st in the district.
Water Polo
The water polo team has had a pretty good season even though it is a bit difficult to train and get ready. The challenges mostly come from the fact that there is a “lack of community” as Coach Gillis puts it from Apopka itself. “It’s difficult in Apopka because we don’t have an Apopka club and we don’t have any pool.” Despite this, the team has had a fun season. “We didn’t necessarily have winning records but our team is improving,” Coach Gillis shared. The boys and girls teams both made it to districts on April 1, 2024, and overall the boys ended with a record of 5-17, while the girls ended with an overall record of 8-12.
Track and Field:
On May 18th, 2024, members of the track and field team traveled to the University of North Florida to compete in the 4A state championships. This season many of the members were able to score very well in their competitions. Members such as Rashad Hemissi placed first in 800m, and the teams placed second in both the 4×400 and 4×800 relay races on April 20th 2024. Overall it looks like the team had a very successful season.
Weightlifting
The boys weightlifting team were undefeated in the regular season. They placed in the top 4 in Metro and top 3 in districts. 4 athletes were able to qualify for the State meet: Kevin Roberts, Trevon Williams, Tahj Palliant, and Nate Jenkins.
Tennis
This season the tennis team was able to make progress though they faced some challenges. The boys had an overall record of 0-8, while the girls had an overall record of 2-6. One of the highlights of this season was the girls team winning the 2024 FHSAA Academic Team Champions Award. They were also the top team in the State for this recognition.
