National Honors Society, an exclusive club open to the best and brightest at APK, welcomes new leadership to their officer panel. The Blue and White contacted the incoming NHS officers (all of whom are Juniors) to see how they plan to continue the legacy of the National Honors Society.
President: Hunter McShan
Hunter McShan, the upcoming president of NHS, shared her long-term goals. Primarily, she is concerned with maintaining communication. It’s not easy to lead such a huge group, but Hunter shows no worry about this large task. She plans to communicate with others using the “BAND app to keep track of events and volunteering opportunities.” Also, NHS allows Hunter to “be in charge” and showcase her leadership qualities. To be the president of NHS, you must excel in leadership and communication, skills which she is confident in.
Vice President: Jolie Santiago
After speaking with Jolie, she mentioned her fond memories with NHS. Before running to be an officer, she “had a blast with community service events.” Her goal to run for Vice President stemmed from the desire to make a positive impact. She shared that she had “ a caring nature and dedication to spread kindness.” After 3 years of dedication to ROTC, she also developed leadership skills well fit for NHS.
Her role as Vice President involves assisting the president with all club tasks. This includes maintaining records, communicating with club members, and organizing events. Jolie shared that this process consists of lunch meetings with the other officers to keep the leadership team on the same page.
Vice President of Community Service: Myah Jones
Myah welcomed The Blue and White with a bright personality and eagerness to speak on her future role in the club. As Vice President of Community Service, her main goal is to “create accessible volunteering opportunities that are more fun for club members.” Some existing volunteering opportunities, like the Vick Road cleanup, are not necessarily the most entertaining events. Myah is aware that many prefer more engaging volunteer work, so she is working towards creating new volunteering opportunities.
As the Vice President of Community Service, she plans to get as many members involved with NHS’s volunteering opportunities as possible. Myah mentioned that she is excited to work with the President, Vice President, and other officers for this school year. Her positive attitude is a perfect addition to the NHS officer team.
Treasurer: Jaden Heard
After Interviewing Jaden, we learned about the dedication it takes to be an NHS member. She speaks on commitment, sharing that it takes “much time and effort to stay on top of NHS.” To be in NHS, you must complete 10 hours of volunteer work each semester and attend every club meeting. Despite the daunting requirements, Jaden didn’t hesitate to run for an officer position. She explained her love for service projects, one of the deciding factors for why she ran for a position. Most notably, she spoke about the debate competition, where NHS members helped debate students from all over Florida.
As Treasurer, she is responsible for managing club fees and funding. Aside from money, Jaden hopes to organize new events and activities for both Juniors and Seniors to enjoy. When asked about the upcoming officers, Jaden shared her liking for the new leadership team. She hopes they can “all work together to keep the club organized and fun.”
Secretary: Maia Wilson
Maia Wilson, the upcoming secretary for NHS, shared her aspirations to plan and track all NHS events. She will be a main player in communication: responsible for sending out messages, creating schedules, and working with the other officers.
Maia’s main goal is to improve the morale of club members. Being a part of the NHS is important, and keeping members motivated is half the battle. The more motivated members, the greater the turnout at volunteering events. She is proud of NHS’s consistency in “helping the community.”
Public Relations/Historian: Hannah Pletcher
Hannah looks forward to her position of promoting the club. As Historian, she will be responsible for social media and broadcasting future activities. A main concern is prioritizing club involvement, so she plans to be active on the NHS Instagram. Hannah prides the club for its organization and productivity throughout the school year. Previously, NHS has participated in canned food competitions, Vick Road cleanup, Special Olympics, and other Apopka-related events. She mostly loves how the club “is mainly student-run,” creating more of a personal experience in NHS.
To current and future members of NHS, you are in good hands. The NHS 2024-2025 officer team is ready for a fun and exciting year filled with opportunities to grow as members and students of the Apopka community.
