As the presidential primaries begin to wrap up, the United States is looking destined for another Trump vs Biden ballot in the 2024 presidential elections. As a repeat of the 2020 election cycle, most people are familiar with the positions of both candidates, however, some major positions of both candidates are explained below.
Current President Joe Biden’s campaign platform includes
- Boosting the economy through “Bidenomics”
- Restoring Roe v. Wade and supporting abortion rights
- Student loan relief programs
- Addressing climate change and promoting green energy
- Implementing universal background checks for firearms
- Defending Obamacare, Social Security, and Medicare
- Increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign platform includes
- Cutting taxes across the board, for individuals and corporations
- Pro-Life, but against 6-week abortion bans
- Increasing domestic oil production
- “America First” foreign policy
- Securing the Mexican border
Some concerns people have with Biden is his shortcomings on the southern border, due to a spike in illegal crossings. Others criticize him for raising taxes or being the cause of inflation. Additionally, his political rivals in Congress don’t support his extensive support for aid in Ukraine, or his handling of the Afghanistan situation. Concerns that people have with Trump are his extensive legal issues. As the only president to be indicted in our nation’s history, Trump has been charged in four criminal cases, from events occurring before, during, and after his presidency.
One major concern with both candidates is age. At the time of their potential nominations, Biden will be 82, and Trump will be 78 years old. So far and throughout the rest of their campaigns, both candidates will have to answer questions about their physical and mental acuity. Another issue is whether or not the two candidates will face off in the debate stage. There will likely be issues again with agreeing over rules and format, which some political commentators are predicting that there will be no presidential debates, which would be unprecedented in the modern era.
While Trump is currently ahead in the polls, he is only ahead by an average of 0.3 points according to the RealClearPolitics average. This signifies a tight race, however, there is a lot of uncertainty about voter turnout, as many Americans do not feel strongly about voting for either candidate. However, you can make your voice heard and vote come November.
