One of the many amazing clubs at Apopka High School is Key Club! According to Sophomore Sophia Powell, president of the club, Key Club is “a service organization with opportunities for leadership” that “strives to strengthen our community and make a positive impact.” Bright Futures, a popular scholarship program, is one reason Key Club is so helpful. Bright Futures has specific requirements you must meet to qualify for the scholarship. The program requires good grades, a 1210-1340 score on the SAT, and 100 hours of community service. Many students in Key Club need the service hours for this scholarship.
Both Sophmore Sophia Powell and Junior Myah Jones, the president of Key Club, joined to get the service hours the club provides. Sophia encourages other students to join Key Club as it’s a “great opportunity to make a positive impact and get service hours through helping the community.”
Key Club has some exciting events coming up! Key Club will be volunteering at Clean the World on November 18th. Clean the World is an organization that recycles old soap and donates it to needy families. Key Club will also be doing a Thanksgiving food drive. The club also just finished its Halloween Candy Gram fundraiser. The candy grams were sold for $2 a bag and were pretty popular.
Mr. Whitcomb sponsors Key Club here, but he said in an interview that the students are the ones running the club. Mr. Whitcomb did not start Key Club, but the club needed a new sponsor, so he sponsored the club when asked by Sophia Powell and Ava Walker (the Vice President). Mr. Whitcomb also told us that Key Club is the high school version of the Kiwanis Club, a global organization focused on service and “improving the world.”
Key Club also has some amazing officers this year! As mentioned, Sophia Powell is the president, Ava Walker is the vice president, and Myah Jones is the editor. However, there are more great officers we have to mention. Rasha Salem is the secretary, Brock Shapiro is the treasurer, and Connor Morris is the WebMaster.
Even though the club has designated officers, every member has an important role in the success of the club. Sophia told us that members “…help make posters for upcoming events, plan service projects or club activities, or help with fundraising.”
Key Club meetings happen every Tuesday after school in Room 655. If you are interested in joining the club, you can talk to Mr. Whitcomb in the same room, 655.
