There are lots of different honor societies here on campus for lots of different interests! The Blue and White compiled a list of these honor societies so that students can get to know which honor societies we have available at AHS.
BETA CLUB
OVERVIEW:
Beta Club is an honor society based on service projects and state and national conventions. Students focus on the four pillars of Beta: Service, Leadership, Character, and Achievement. Beta helps students get their community service hours for scholarships and other service requirements.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- Beta’s state convention is January 26-27
- Feeding the needy at First Baptist Church every Monday
- Buddy Ball on Saturdays
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students must have a 3.5 GPA and no behavioral issues. Fees for the society are $50 for new members and $30 for returning members.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings are on the second Monday of the month in the cafeteria.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
OVERVIEW:
Club sponsor Ms. Bercegeay gave an overview of the NHS: “The National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the merit-based honor societies that recognize students who demonstrate strong academics, leadership, character, and service to their community or school. The organization has been in operation for more than 100 years, and there are chapters in all 50 states, as well as schools in other countries.” The NHS is mostly concerned with building leaders and community service.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Ms. Bercegeay also said this about student requirements: “In order to get invited to apply, students must have a 3.5 unweighted GPA. Once they apply, it is reviewed by a panel of judges and if accepted they are inducted into the organization. Acceptance is based on the pillars of the National Honor Society: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.”

Meetings happen on the first Monday of the month in the cafeteria.
TRI-M (MUSIC NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY)
OVERVIEW:
Tri-M does a lot of service activities and promotes growth in your own musicianship.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- There are no events currently planned.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students have to be a junior or senior, and need to be currently and previously enrolled in a music course that they received an A or a B in.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings happen in the Chorus room whenever the society decides it’s needed.
FRENCH NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
OVERVIEW:
Ms. Carder gave an overview for the society: “The French Honor Society is a national club for Honor students who are enrolled in French 3 Honors and in AP French language. They will graduate with the French Honor Society cord and receive a certificate of Honors. All French 2 students who already know they will continue French can join.”
UPCOMING EVENTS:
National French Week from Nov. 6 through Nov.10.
- Day 1- French cuisine demonstration
- Day 2- French movies with English subtitles
- Day 3- Cultural presentation on French art, food, music, literature, history, and contribution to science in the Media Center
- Day 4- French-themed games or sports tournaments
- Day 5- French trivia or quiz competition
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
“All French 2 students who will register for French 3 Honors can join at any time during their French 2 year, all French 3 Honors and AP students on campus can also join. Students applying need a 2.8 GPA and 4 teacher recommendations.” -Ms. Carder
MEETING DATES:
Meetings happen once a month on the second Thursday in room 642.
RHO KAPPA (SOCIAL STUDIES HONOR SOCIETY)
OVERVIEW:
Mr. Mellon gave an overview of the society: “…we have in years past set up tutoring for any of the Social Studies classes, helped with voter registration, worked with local groups to help maintain their historical items, and helped with school cleanups… Students learn how to foster their leadership skills as well as their organizational skills in relation to history and government.”
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- Recruitment drive (applications can be obtained from Mr. Mellon in room 514)
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students must be a junior or senior, have a weighted 3.5 GPA or above, and have completed 3 Advanced (AP or AICE) Social Studies courses. There is a one-time fee of $35.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings take place in room 514 on the second Monday of the month and on an “as needed” basis.
INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY
OVERVIEW:
Mr. Morphew gave this overview of the society: “The International Thespian Society honors student achievement in theatre. The society supports students’ intention and participation in the theatre beginning with the district and then state theatre festivals and promotes the study and continuous learning of theatrical skills at the collegiate and professional level.”
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- Fall mainstage production of Steel Magnolias
- Winter production of Hoka Ha! Improv Comedy Show
- Members are always working on some sort of theater project
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
“Students must participate in theater and acquire ten production points. These are gained in various levels depending on how the student is participating in shows, events, and even watching live plays in the community. Students must maintain participation within theatre to be an active member of Apopka High School’s Thespian Charter.” – Mr. Morphew. There is a $35 membership fee.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings take place every other Thursday for inducted members.
MU ALPHA THETA (MATH HONOR SOCIETY)
OVERVIEW:
Mr. Sensiper gave this overview of Mu Alpha Theta: “Mu Alpha Theta is an honor society that provides tutoring to students, and also allows students to compete in national math competitions…Additionally, we offer a great opportunity for volunteer hours for students who need them for purposes like NHS volunteer hours or Bright Futures, and most importantly, they’ll further develop their math skills.”

- Tutoring sessions every Wednesday after school
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
“In order for a student to join they have to have an A or a B in all of Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, and Algebra 2 Honors and additionally, they must be taking a high-level math course that is either an AP course or a course at Valencia.” – Mr. Sensiper
MEETING DATES:
Tutoring sessions are every Wednesday and non-tutoring member meetings are every other Friday. Both happen in Room 432.
NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY
OVERVIEW:
We asked Ms. Lewis about NEHS and this is what she told us: “I think that every group has a niche, like science, history, and math have their societies and I think that it’s important to be as represented as possible and to defend literacy and books.”
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month – they will have a table with literature on it near the cafeteria during lunches
- The first week of October is Banned Books Week
- Black Poetry Day – October 17th

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students must have a 3.0 unweighted GPA overall and a 3.5 unweighted GPA in their English classes.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings happen in Room 523 on the third Tuesday of the month at 2:30 p.m.
SCIENCE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
OVERVIEW:
The Science National Honor Society does experiments and plans events. They are planning to take some field trips over the course of the year. Ms. Modesto informed us that Busch Gardens has a physics day and UCF is going to have a STEM day as well. In this honor society, students will grow their love of science.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
- Fundraiser in October to raise money for their field trip in December to Busch Gardens
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students must be a sophomore or older and have a 3.0 or higher in all of their science classes. Students must have also taken at least two science classes before joining.
MEETING DATES:
Meetings happen once a month in Room 541 (Ms. Modesto’s classroom).
We also contacted Ms. Benitez Gotay, the sponsor of the Spanish National Honor Society, but did not get a response back in time.
