Buckle up science fans, because we can hypothesize that this year is going to get wild with our school’s Science National Honor Society! The AHS Blue & White had the opportunity to not only interview the sponsor of the club, AHS teacher, Amanda Modesto, but also interview the club’s president, AHS Senior, Anna LaMay. These two provided us with a mound of information that we can share about the club this year. When will the club first meet? What will they be doing? What are the hopes for the club this year? All of these questions and more have been given in depth answers so that you can make a decision on whether or not you want to join!

“The purpose is to have students come together that have a love of science and do well in the science classes and then together they get to do science activities,” Ms. Modesto puts simply. The club also goes to elementary schools to help out the kids there with their own “science activities.” Last year, the club went to Dream Lake Elementary here in Apopka. Their adventures take them to many cool places. Ms. Modesto says that sometimes they have a science night/day at places like UCF or Busch Gardens. Anna adds that she hopes to go to Busch Gardens this year for their Physics Day. 

If you don’t already know, Busch Gardens is a theme park located in Tampa Bay, Florida. According to buschgardens.com, Busch Gardens will have their Physics Day, also known as their “Science of Thrills,” on December 2nd of this year. “Physics students will get one hour of exclusive park ride time and interactive physics stations located around the park,” says the site. It’s no surprise to see that Anna LaMay, being a fervid enjoyer of all things science, is hoping to have the Science National Honor Society attend such an event.

Anna is very passionate about helping other students with their science work and wants to teach them how fun science can be. Anna, being the president, has a lot of responsibility, and she tells us that the impact the Science National Honor Society has on the school is that it facilitates conversation and achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related fields. What are STEM subjects? There are aerospace engineering, astronomy, biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, and computer science. All of these are science subjects, but what is science? Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following research based on evidence. The Science National Honor Society is there to make science subjects easier to understand for its members.

If your grades are decent and you enjoy science, why not join? The first meeting was on September 7th, a Wednesday, and Modesto said she expected around thirty members for the club, but about thirty to forty showed up, exceeding expectations; however, it’s not too late to join. The location is in room 541. Anyone who qualifies is more than welcome to join. Let’s get physical!
