Beta Club Is Going To Convention
After a successful 2021 Florida Convention, the Apopka High Beta Club is looking to repeat its success in this year’s Florida Convention, which will be taking place on February 4-5, 2022, at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando. This year’s State Convention will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual events.
The Blue and White was able to interview Beta Club sponsors Mrs. Hough and Ms. Pickels. When asked how she thinks this year’s convention will go, Mrs. Hough responded that it would be “Much better, so far we are able to go live, last year we weren’t it was all online and just wasn’t the same.” Last year, being 100% online meant that members couldn’t get the full experience. This year, students going in person will get to stay at the hotel and participate in the activities outside of their events at the convention.
Events in the convention include everything from subject tests to woodworking. Beta members will have the opportunity to showcase their skill set during the convention. The ultimate goal is to make it to the national convention. To do so, members need to place top 3 in the event they compete in. Last year, the Beta club had over a dozen members who qualified for the national convention.
Outside of the convention, Beta Club is also involved in numerous service projects. Every Monday, Beta Club members help Next Step Ministry feed the homeless at the First Baptist Church in Apopka. Beta Club also held a blanket drive for the homeless. Additionally, Beta did a food drive for Thanksgiving, so that members of the Apopka community would be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
Beta Club helps with Buddy Ball, where members help disabled and/or special needs students play baseball. Additionally, Beta Club helped tutor students in the Apopka community, and hosted a feminine hygiene drive so that every classroom could be stocked with feminine hygiene products. Beta Club can always be counted on to help out our local community.
